J. Cole has officially launched his new audio series, « Inevitable, » taking listeners on a journey through pivotal moments in his career. In the premiere episode, titled The Come Up Mixtape Vol. 1, the Dreamville Records founder shared insights into his early days in New York City, the release of his first mixtape, and how Kanye West became a transformative figure in his life and music.

Kanye West: A pivotal influence on J. Cole’s storytelling

During the nearly two-hour conversation with Ibrahim “Ib” Hamad and Scott Lazer, J. Cole opened up about the challenges of finding his voice in hip-hop. Reflecting on his early struggles, he admitted:

« I didn’t sell [any] drugs. It was nothing like my favorite rappers. I didn’t know how to talk about my life in a way that people could connect with, and then f**king Kanye West happened. »

J. Cole credited Kanye’s 2003 single « Through The Wire » and its accompanying music video as a game-changer for him:

« The ‘Through The Wire’ video dropped, and that st changed my life. Kanye was the first time that I saw myself in somebody. He made it possible to talk about your life or your regular-a perspective in a way that’s appealing. »

A complicated relationship with Ye

While J. Cole holds Kanye in high regard for his artistic influence, their relationship has been far from smooth. Kanye appeared to take shots at J. Cole earlier this year on a remix of Future and Metro Boomin’s « Like That », rapping: « Play J. Cole, get the psy dry / Play this st back 130 times. »

This tension seems to trace back to J. Cole’s 2016 track « False Prophets, » which many speculated was a critique of Kanye. Ye himself acknowledged the rumors during an episode of Justin Laboy’s “The Download” podcast, stating: « Somebody told me it was halfway about me. »

Despite these public disputes, J. Cole’s praise for Kanye’s influence highlights a deep respect for Ye’s contributions to hip-hop.

A nostalgic moment for fans

To accompany the debut episode of « Inevitable, » J. Cole has finally released his 2007 project, The Come Up Mixtape Vol. 1, on streaming platforms. The mixtape features classics like « Dollar And A Dream, » « Dead Presidents, » and « Simba. » This move allows fans to revisit the early days of Cole’s career and experience the raw beginnings of an artist who has since become one of the most respected names in the industry.

With « Inevitable » now underway and his legendary mixtape hitting digital platforms for the first time, J. Cole continues to bridge the gap between his past and present, offering fans a deeper understanding of his journey and influences.
